Submitting your study application – these can be submitted 4 months in advance of the course start date
August/September Intake:
Unless you have received a late offer from the Education Provider, Masters or Postgraduate applications must be submitted by the end of July. Applications for undergraduates utilising the Approval in Principal Scheme may be submitted up to 4 months prior to the start of the semester. Three weeks before to the course start date, students may submit any later offers that education providers have made to them for undergraduate courses. You must give proof of the late offer and the commencement date of the course. All other students who wish to study in Ireland at any other time of the year must submit their applications 3 weeks before to the commencement of the programme, but they may do so up to 4 months in advance.
3 week rule
Less than three weeks before the course start date (not the extension date), student applications received at the Visa Office will be returned unprocessed. Be aware that VFS may need two or three working days to deliver your application to the Visa Office. No exceptions will be made; it is the responsibility of each applicant to guarantee that this deadline is met.
English Language Test
- For all student visas, the filing of an approved English language test is required. Your application will be rejected if you don’t submit a test; the Visa Officer has no discretion on this requirement. English Test can be clicked for further details.
- This condition cannot be waived by Irish educational institutions for visa application purposes.
Approval in Principal Scheme (AIP
The Approval in Principal programme is only available to applicants for undergraduate degree programmes who are awaiting their school results in late July or early August. Students can no longer apply for the Approval in Principal Scheme if they are enrolled in a postgraduate Masters programme. You can apply for an Irish visa and submit the provisional results to the Visa Office along with all other necessary evidence, as indicated on the checklist and the Supplemental Student Form, if you are awaiting your university’s final results in late July or early August. These papers will be used to inform the decision. Before issuing the visa, the Visa Office may put your application on hold and require a copy of the outcome.
The Approval in Principal scheme allows applicants from India and Sri Lanka who have been accepted into an undergraduate course at a college, university, institute of technology, or QQI (Quality and Qualifications Ireland), and who are applying for a study visa, to do so without having to pay the full amount of the required college fees up front. When applying for the Approval in Principal Programme, participants must deposit €6,000 towards the fees; the remaining balance is due when they submit their final results and their confirmed letter of offer. Your application can be turned in three months prior to the start of the course. Your application will be evaluated by the Visa Office, who will let you know if it can be accepted in principle.
Payment of Fees
All other students are required to pay their entire tuition when they apply for a visa. Please confirm with your education provider the deadline for paying the entire fee. The Visa Office will need to see proof that the whole fee has been paid if the education provider requests that it be paid in full before you apply for an Irish visa. The Visa Officer will only consider study applications in all other circumstances, when the whole amount is anticipated to be paid by the time you enrol in the course, if a student has paid at least €6,000 towards their fee if it is less than €12,000. In certain situations, the visa application will be rejected if less than €6000 has been paid. If you are receiving a scholarship for part of the fee, the amount to be paid before the visa application can be considered is 50% of the gross amount, unless the scholarship awarded is more than half of the tuition fee.
Appeals
Please be aware that there is no assurance that an appeal will be processed in time for a course start date if a visa application is denied within the recommended processing dates. Get your application in early and do it right the first time. For instance, it is unlikely that your appeal will be resolved in time for you to attend your course if you submit your application only 4-5 weeks before the start date of a course and are rejected. Communication Go to the Contact Us section of the Embassy website and select Study Visas from the drop-down menu if you have any questions.
